A new annual publication with an innovative twist

We’re launching a brand new magazine — an annual edition of brava we’re calling the “brava Encore Edition.” Coming out in May to celebrate our fifth anniversary — and each May thereafter — we’re creating a publication unlike anything ever done in this community.

When we decided to launch an annual, we didn’t want to follow in the well-established footsteps of other publishers. Isthmus has its Annual Manual; Capital Newspapers has its Answer Book; In Business has its Executive Register.

All have been done, and done well, so we knew an annual publication along those lines would be gratuitous. If we were going to launch something readers would want to hang on to for a year, we knew it had to be innovative.
Hence the creation of our special Encore Edition, devoted to “Extraordinary Women in Our Midst.”

Here’s the gist of it: Within this publication, we’ll highlight the days, hours and special moments experienced by more than 50 women living and working in the greater Madison area. This means we’ll be following women and photographing them on an “average” day, one that’s typically anything but average. And we’ll accompany the photographs with a diary of sorts — often in the women’s own words.

We’ll be featuring the most diverse group of women imaginable. From surgeon to sheriff to farmer to attorney to entertainer to stay-at-home mom … our goal is for readers to come away from the publication with an enhanced appreciation for the individual talents and strengths each of us possess — talents that make this community such a wonderful place to live.

Also included? Pivotal moments in a woman’s life; historical photos of fascinating women from Madison’s history and modern women photographed at eight different times over a 24-hour period. For instance, consider what you’re doing at 4 a.m. There are two options in my world. I’m either asleep or awake, hoping I’ll be able to fall back to sleep. But you’ll be amazed what other women are up to at 4 a.m. And we’ll be there.

In terms of pivotal moments? We’ll photograph a newborn baby taking his or her first breath; we’ll capture a bride as she says “I do;” we’ll be there at the dinner table as a family sits down together after a long day. Our Encore Edition will be real, it will be fascinating and it will be about you, many individuals you recognize and others you have yet to meet.

There are many more aspects to this annual publication (including updates on the individuals featured in some of brava’s most compelling stories) but space is short so we’ll keep you informed in future issues. One thing I know for sure — beyond launching brava, nothing has excited me more than the thought of this new publication. We can’t wait to read it and hope you’re as excited as we are.
